Do Not Lose Heart

2 Corinthians 4: 8 “…Perplexed but not in despair

2 Corinthians 4: 16 “Therefore we do not lose heart “

Background

Paul was converted on the Damascus Road (Acts9) and Ananias is instructed to go and pray for him, because, God says in Acts 9:15 “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. ”  Paul says of his conversion in Galatians 1: 11-12 “I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

Paul endured much hardship in his life. How could he make such bold statements as these below?

Philippians 1: 21 “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

2 Corinthians 1: 3-4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

2 Corinthians 1: 8-9 “...We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, … But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

Our Weakness and Our Hope –  2 Corinthians 4: 7-18

2 Corinthians 4: 7 “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. ”  We are ordinary, not so special, but we have something special within us.

Therefore we do not lose heart.  Why?

1.The power of God at work within us

2. The protection of God through trials.  The heart of the gospel is victory through defeat.  2 Corinthians 4: 8 “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

3. The promise of eternal life. 2 Corinthians 4: 14 “because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself.

4. v15 “All this is for your benefit… to the glory of God.

5. v16 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

Matthew 6: 34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

So, what should we do?

2 Corinthians 4: 18 “ So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Psalm 121.
